Photo Competition 2017

Another year of mountain activities was behind us, so there was time for our traditional Photo Competition. Photo Contest seems to be getting bigger with every year - one hundred and eight photos were submitted to this year's edition. Besides Canadian Rocky Mountains we received photos from French and Austrian Alps, Beskydy, Opava and even Laos. The new thing this year is that we made an effort to make the competition ... bilingual. Almost all our Club's members speak good, or at least decent, English, while not everyone speaks Polish. These allowed a bunch of new people to compete and/or cast their votes.

The competition was very tough, and the results quite close in many categories. In this post I will only present the winning photos. Those who would be interested seeing all of them, I encourage to visit https://www.dropbox.com/sh/s6e9tprzvi382nk/AAAqRleZqzNxNhB5ZebBLOW1a?dl=0

And here are the winners in the ten categories:

A – „Ludzie i góry” – Piotr Rajski Award – “People and the mountains”

A1. Invictus. – 68 points. Author: Piotr Rajski. Model: Mike Trzecieski-Alexander. The photo was taken in Zillertal Alps (Austria), during the second leg of Berlin Hohenweg (7 day long trek) in July 2017. This photo was also voted to be the Best Photo of 2017.

Mount San Jacinto 3302 m - my easiest three thousand-er yet

2017-12-30

It looked for a while that the hiking season was over for me with the trip to Forgetmenot Ridge in the end of September. However, due to a kind invitation from our friends, with Lady Wife, we went to California toward the end of December. It was -33C in Edmonton when we left, and +27C in Palm Springs where we landed on 29 December. We used this warm weather to squeeze another hike in 2017.

Bogdan-Ela Classic Bike Ride

Bike ride 15 Oct 2017

Nasty winds outside seem to encourage me to recall the pleasures of the last Sunday. With temperatures approaching 15C, and sunny, windless afternoon, we had excellent conditions for our bike ride. Five riders disembarked their bicycles at my place, but we have reached the full strength only about 20 minutes later, at Fort Edmonton Footbridge.

The fortunate participants were:

Forgetmenot Ridge or Grzęda Niezapominajka

30 September 2017

The last overnight trip of the season to Forgetmenot Ridge (2240 m) was organized by Yanek Wójcik (the ridge is visible behind his back). This 9.2 km hike, with 625 m of altitude gain, is described as "strenuous."

Castle Mountain or a Day in the Mountains.

16 September 2017

(Clicking on the photos allows to see them in almost original sizes.)

Castle Mountain (2766 m) is an impressive massif on the junction of Trans-Canada Highway and Highway 93, from British Columbia, in Banff National Park. This "cultish" mountain ("kultowa góra") was on the list of our goals for quite some time, but different factors, typically weather, prevented previous explorations.

This time, the Trip Leader, Roman Lipiecki, gathered an impressive team. We started at 7:00 am from the Castle Mountain Hostel, when it was still dark.

From the left to right these were: Witek Kurpiński, Michał Trzecieski, Ewa Stroemich, Marek Kucmierz, Piotr Rajski, Ken Wells (Ewa's boy-friend) and Gennady Sergiejev. (Missing Roman Lipiecki).

Pocaterra Ridge i Mount Lady MacDonald

2 September 2017
