10.1 km, +690/-740 m, 5.5 hours (guidebook time)
Shortly after we left Greizer Hut, the weather started to deteriorate again.
Even alpine violets had to adapt to the fresh alpine snow.
Crossing Lapenscharte Notch ...
... and this field of boulders, which not be a biggie in normal circumstances, all of sudden required great attentiveness on our side. It was very slippery and one careless step could result in injury.
We had to cross a few streams ...
... and another slippery traverse. Luckily, there were fixed cables for protection.
The pity was that, the whole day, we hiked in this cold fog, seeing nothing of, reportedly, very beautiful section of Zillertal Alps.
Because of the fog, and these fields of snow, we were uncertain if we were still on the right path.
We also experienced problems with our GPS. Kasseler Hutte was almost 2 km further than what was indicated by my GPS. So, either the distance was longer than 10.1 km, suggested by the guidebook, or my GPS had difficulty receiving a signal in this weather.
And, boy, was I happy to finally get a bowl of hot soup.
These Ukrainian and Russian guys were quite friendly with each other at that time. I bet they would still be friendly today. It is only after you leave the mountains for the "real world," when nationalities start to cause problems.
To be continued.
Day 8. Kasseler Hutte to Edelhutte.
